I bought a Brunton 26 back in Dec of 2008, and it simply never worked for my laptop, a 13' MacBook. I kept it, despite the fact that it cost so much ($219), because it worked for smaller items (digital camera, battery charger) that I also use in the field a lot, and because I couldn't return it: I had purchased it with a grant, and the grant became inactive later in 2009, before I had the time to call the company to ask them about the problems and maybe exchange it. I took it with me to Veracruz, Mexico, this summer of 2010 to do fieldwork, since I was going to use my digital camera and wanted to plug it in with the adaptor to the solar panel. This had worked before, and didn't think twice about it, so I didn't bother to test it before packing and leaving for the field. Once in Mexico the thing just wouldn't work. If I plug something to it the lights might come on at first and you'll hear the noise from the battery charger starting up, for example, or the green light from the camera adaptor, but it'll quite right away. So now it's just a dead weight. Items as expensive as this one, and with no moving parts that I can see, shouldn't just fail. -- Didn't live up to expectations, faulty
I bought this for a camping trip. I would be gone for a week, and wanted to make sure my phones stayed charged. Even in somewhat cloudy conditions it charged my phones. I have an Iphone and HTC Touch. I could not charge both at the same time, but it worked great one at a time. -- It works
If you are new to solar panels (like me) beware. The attachments that come with the product are not sufficient to charge most of what you have. For instance: Want to charge your laptop? Go buy a specific adapter for that. Same for your i-pod, camera, etc. What Brunton gives you is a cigarette lighter adapter. It is up to you to buy the add on's that sync with your components. Why did I give this product 2 stars? Because I haven't even been able to use it. I am still spending the time and money ordering the extra parts to make it work! Now if Brunton had disclosed all this so that I knew ahead of time, then that would have been fair. But, that would lose sales so they let you figure it out after the purchase - and in my case, 2 days before a trip. Brunton knows what they are doing (and that many of thier buyers are new to their product) so the failure to fully disclose the need for additional (and necessary) add-on's, in my opinion, intentional. Not the way to run a business. -- Brunton Solaris 26 - beware.
This panel is nice but the most wattage I ever got was 11 watts.
They claim at the mfg website 26 watts max at a max of 1.4 amps.
Well the max voltage you could have without destroying your typical
electrical device is about 15 volts. Watts equals 15 x 1.4
or a maximum of 21 watts. The claimed 26 watts is not even possible.
In realty the maximum I got was 11 watts. For an eleven watt panel
advertised at 11 watts it would be good. -- misleading specs
I needed to purchase a foldable solar panel that would recharge my camcorder battery while I go on the Trans Sierra Hike -- a 5-6 day hike across the Sierras. I want to videotape the entire trip and I only have four batteries that last only about 1-2 hours of videotaping. With a car charger connector power adapter battery charger (male end) that I purchased for the Canon HV20 camcorder and the car charger receiver cable that comes with the Brunton (female end), I can charge the batteries while I hike (one battery at a time). I'm strapping the solar panel to the outside of my backpack. I tested the panel and my battery charger and it fully charged my battery in a few hours (I had run down the battery until the camera said it was dead).
I can charge or run basically any electronic device that can be powered off of a 12V car charger -- pretty awesome stuff. This solar panel was the best value for the price. The lower wattage panels (and lower priced) would not have had enough wattage to do the job. I'll try to write another review after my trip. -- Brunton 12V - 26 Watt - Great Buy
